Guided snowshoeing weekend in Val Müstair

Let’s go snowshoeing and explore the beauty of one the most beautiful alpine valleys in Switzerland: Val Müstair, located between the Swiss National Park and South Tyrol.

This trip is led by Celine Kahn, mountain leader.

What’s the plan?

Saturday

Meet at 11:00 at the bus station Buffalora P10. From there we follow the hiking trail in a southerly direction through open terrain and pine and Swiss stone pine forest to Buffalora. Shortly after Buffalora we have to make our own track to Jufplaun, where we have stunning views of the Val Mora and the Lower Engadine Dolomites. At Mots we make our way back via the Döss dal Termel and finally come back to the starting point via another path. We take the bus to Hotel Central in Valchava, where we can enjoy the sauna, have our nice dinner and spend the night.

Sunday

Breakfast at the hotel. Then, from the village, we take the bus to Lü and depending on the conditions and fitness of the group, we have several options. One is to hike back to Valchava through the stunning forest, up the small Valpaschun lake and down across the open areas facing the stunning mountains of South Tyrol. Or we have a longer option, hiking towards Alp Champatsch, then continuing over the Pass da Costainas to Tamangur Dadaint, the highest Swiss stone pine forest. We climb back up to Fuorcla Funtauna da S-charl. There we might see ibex and chamois if we’re lucky! From there it goes on to the Ofenpass. We catch a bus back to Zernez in the afternoon for everyone to return home.

On each day, you should expect:

-Distance: approx. 10-12km
-Ascent: 400-600m
-Descent: approx. 400m

Distances and elevation gain may vary depending on the snow conditions and the itinerary chosen on the day.

Requirements

To join this event, you need to be a fit hiker. No previous snowshoeing experience needed.

Insurance

It is the participant’s responsibility to get health and accident insurances that cover mountain rescue. Becoming a Rega patron is highly recommended (CHF 40 per year only for emergency medical assistance from the air).

How to get there?

If you are traveling from Zurich by public transport, we recommend you to take the following:

-Saturday: Zurich HB 08:07 – 11:00 Buffalora P10 (via Landquart and Zernez)
-Sunday: Valchava, cumün 15:39 – 19:53 Zurich HB – (via Zernez and Landquart) – depending on what time and where the event finishes

You only need to book train tickets to/from Zernez. Transport within Val Müstair is free for hotel guests.
