Guided Snowshoeing Weekend in Val Müstair (Graubünden)
The Val Müstair, located at the southeastern most tip of Switzerland between the Swiss National Park and South Tyrol, is one of the most beautiful alpine valleys in Switzerland. With its intact nature, mild climate and good cuisine, it offers a great weekend for snowshoeing. From the cozy and very well-run hotel we undertake varied tours in the Val Müstair and Ofenpass area.
This trip is led by Otto van Andel, International mountain leader.
What’s the plan?
You will meet the guide at the Buffalora bus stop (P10) on the Ofenpassstrasse at 11:00. (please make sure you can carry your luggage for the weekend in a backpack because you won’t go to the hotel until later). From here we follow the hiking trail in a southerly direction through open terrain and pine and pine forest to Buffalora. Shortly after Buffalora we have to choose our own route to Jufplaun, where we have an impressive view of Val Mora and the Lower Engadine Dolomites. At Mots we choose the return route via the Döss dal Termel and finally return to the starting point on the same hiking trail. We continue to the hotel by bus.
Technical info: (9.5km) 4h walking (w/o breaks) – 480m ascent – 480m descent
Drive to Buffalora. From here we climb over Margun Buffalora to Munt Buffalora (2630 m) in 2½ hours. Here we enjoy a wonderful panoramic view. Descent to Buffalora and return to Müstair.
Distance: 8.5 km | Time required: 4½ h, ascent: 704 m | Descent: 704 m
Technical info: (8.5km) 4.5h walking – 704m ascent – 704m descent
From Valchava, we take the bus to Lü and hike towards Alp Tabladatsch. The hike continues over the Fuorcla Sassalba pass. With good conditions, we could climb the Muntet. We continue hiking to Tamangur Dadaint, the highest pine forest in Switzerland. We climb again to the Fuorcla Funtauna da S-charl. In this section, we could observe ibex and chamois. Before there we continue to Lü and back to Valchava. From here we take the bus home.
Technical info: (16km) 6h walking – 880m ascent – 1100m descent
Hikes are adapted to the danger of avalanches / subject to change.
The very well-run Hotel Central (www.centralvalchava.ch/) accommodates us. We stay in a beautifully furnished double, triple, or quadruple room with a shower/toilet. The hotel has a sauna (Finnish sauna). The kitchen is also very well maintained and always surprises with successful creations.
To join this event, you need to be a fit hiker. No previous snowshoeing experience is needed.
It is the participant’s responsibility to get health and accident insurances that cover mountain rescue, including extreme sports. Becoming a Rega patron is highly recommended (CHF 40 per year only for emergency medical assistance from the air).
