Weekend hike with mules in the Gruyere + Visit of a 150 year-old forge

Join our 2-day hike with mules in the Morteys valley. The Vanil Noir nature reserve is a haven of peace, dominated by majestic peaks and inhabited by the fauna of ibex, chamois, marmots, eagles, and asp vipers.

Get to know the mules that you will spend the weekend with, look after them, cook together with local products, observe the local fauna, sleep in a charming high pasture chalet, and experience Charmey in the early 1900s with the visit of its old forge.

This event is also family-friendly.

What’s the plan?

Day 1

Meet your guide Jonathan at Bulle train station at 09:10. Jonathan gives you a lift to the departure of the hike, where the mules and mule drivers are getting ready. After spending some time there to get to know and look after the animals that will accompany you for the weekend, you prepare your lunch soup all together on the campfire in the forest and eat to get some energy for the rest of the day. You then start the 2.5-hour hike with mules up to Cabane des Marindes, a high pasture chalet located at 1868m in the Vanil Noir natural reserve, surrounded by the highest peaks of the canton of Fribourg. Fondue and night at the chalet.

Day 2

After breakfast, we spend some time looking after and preparing the mules before starting our hike down. After we finish the hike in the late morning, we make our way to the forge museum in La Tzintre, a small village near Charmey, which shows the history of the valley. Since the 19th century, the blacksmith of Charmey was shoeing the horses and repairing the lumberjack’s tools in La Tzintre. The forge was very important in the local economy. All the old tools and machines used back in time are still there, and the forge looks just like a hundred years ago as if the blacksmith had left the place untouched. Lunch at the forge with local products before returning to Bulle train station.
