Avalanche safety – Basic course 2

In order to enjoy the mountains safely all year round, reading the terrain you’re playing on and understanding the avalanche danger is a must. With all winter sports that take you outside of the secured slopes and paths (snowshoeing, off-piste skiing, ski touring, etc.), one has to not only understand and prevent the danger but also be equipped and ready to respond in case of an accident.

After following basic course 1, this course will teach you more advanced tricks to safely plan your winter tours and to keep practicing how to use the avalanche safety gear and rescue multiple victims.

What’s the plan?

Avalanche safety - Basic course 2 1

Meet at Flumserberg Tanneboden at 11:30. While we hike up to where we will be staying in the evening, we look at the snow, the landscape and all the elements around us. Once we arrive at the hut, we do some theory and plan our tour for the following day. Dinner and night at the hut.

On Sunday, we hike the tour that we planned on Saturday, making sure everyone leads the group at some point, doing some avalanche rescue exercises, and using the terrain to do various exercises in the snow. Return to Flumserberg Tannenboden in the afternoon. We start with some theory at Hotel – Restaurant Bergheim. After approx. one hour of theory, we head out and use the terrain to do various exercises in the snow.

At the end of the weekend, you will be able to:

-Read and understand topographical maps
-Plan your winter tours safely using the maps and adapting on the terrain
-Make a snow profile to observe the different snow layers
-Test the propagation risk with an extended column test
-Rescue multiple avalanche victims using your transceiver, probe and shovel
-Understand and apply the ABC first aid rules

Avalanche knowledge is not something you learn in one day, it requires a lot of practice. During this basic course, you will be given the tools needed to keep learning and practicing the skills acquired.
